Abstract

The purpose of this study is to study the machinability of S355 structural steel by analysis of the surface roughness obtained by CNC milling operations. The research is targeted to perform an evaluation of the influence of the machining parameters such as the spindle speed, feed rate and the depth of cut on the surface roughness parameter Rz. The study includes design of test specimens in Autodesk Inventor CAD/CAM software, determination of machining parameters and experimental manufacturing of workpieces by CNC milling. The quality of the generated surfaces was assessed by the surface roughness measurements performed on the machined samples. The Taguchi experimental design and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used for the analysis and optimization of the machining process with the help of Minitab software. The results indicated that the machining parameters have a significant effect on surface roughness, with the depth of cut being the most influential parameter. The optimum machining performance was achieved in experiment no. 4 with the lowest surface roughness value of Rz = 5.69 μm and the highest S/N ratio of -15.10 dB. On the other hand, the highest value of Rz was 11.26 μm for experiment no. 6. The results show that the selection of proper machining parameters can considerably enhance the surface quality and the machining performance, therefore providing useful indications for the optimization of the CNC milling operations on S355 structural steel.
